Inspiring Songs and Resources for a New Generation

At a time when the world needs new sources of inspiration, Chanukah Anew brings original songs and educational materials to Jewish families, synagogues, and music educators.

Chanukah Anew ~ Arts & Education launched in 2024, although has been cultivated through years of tradition and practice in community in the redwoods of Humboldt County. This initiative is designed to offer unique Chanukah songs and curriculum to engage students and families across North America.

This transformative project reframes Chanukah as a celebration of nature, family, community, and peace. For over 25 years, Rabbi Naomi Steinberg has shared her earth-based teachings of Chanukah from her home in the majestic redwood forests of California. Her songs and teachings are now accessible to a broader audience.

Living in the forest, beyond the reach of light pollution, the long, dark winter nights brings the spirit of Chanukah to life. It’s a time for reflection, connection, and envisioning a peaceful world
— Rabbi Naomi

This wisdom, rooted in nature and community, shapes the heart of Chanukah Anew. The project also explores the balance of light and darkness—a theme often overlooked in mainstream celebrations—by encouraging deeper reflections on natural cycles, spiritual traditions, and cultural diversity.

Popular culture often extols light and disparages darkness, contributing to racial prejudice and negative attitudes toward wilderness. Drawing on traditional and contemporary mystical insights, Chanukah Anew materials will encourage learners to think beyond binary categories of black and white, exploring the interplay of light and dark so essential to human spirituality.

Chanukah Anew provides free or low-cost resources, including a digital songbook and school curricula, accessible via an open-access website. These materials highlight the importance of the winter season, the warmth of family, and the pursuit of peace, offering fresh perspectives for both Jewish and non-Jewish educators. Through its curriculum, Chanukah Anew promotes positive representations of Jewish culture, helping to reduce antisemitism and foster inclusivity.
